It's a list of features that were present in XP but were removed for Vista. It's a very interesting read if you're curious about what was removed.

As someone who uses Windows Vista practically daily, I've always wondered where all the negativity in the media comes from. Sure, Vista isn't perfect (as if any operating system is), but I just don't see where all the complaints are coming from. It runs just fine on my old (6 years) machine, all my software and hardware is compatible, and it's stable as a rock. Microsoft has been wondering the same thing, and after a little test, they may have found out why people seem to dislike Vista so much.

Microsoft went to San Fransisco, rounded up a few die-hard Windows XP fans, and asked them about their opinion on Windows Vista, all while videotaping them. They were then introduced to a secret project within Microsoft, code-named "Mojave", a new operating system from Microsoft. Over 90 percent of the respondents gave positive feedback to Mojave. "Oh wow," said one user.

And then they were told the truth. There is no Mojave. Mojave was 'just' Windows Vista.

While the test of course lacks vital elements of the whole Vista experience, such as installing, upgrading, hooking up hardware, connecting to the network, and so on, this little test does demonstrate an important aspect of the whole negativity surrounding Windows Vista: some of it is based on nothing but perception, instead of experience. To how much that "some" amounts remains to be seen, of course.

Still, I'd hazard a guess it amounts to quite a bit, and so does Microsoft. They're starting a campaign to tell "the real Vista story", and this Mojave test, including its footage, provides Microsoft with some decent ammo to combat the perception problems troubling its latest operating system.

I’ve gotten a lot of ema

Microsoft looks to 'Mojave' to revive Vista's image

I've gotten a lot of email about this article, and while I discussed it on the podcast this week (which you like haven't heard yet) and have a note about it in today's Short Takes (which isn't online yet), it bears mentioning because, well, I told you so:

After months of searching for ways to defend its oft-maligned Windows operating system, Microsoft may just have found its best weapon: Vista's skeptics.

Spurred by an e-mail from someone deep in the marketing ranks, Microsoft last week traveled to San Francisco, rounding up Windows XP users who had negative impressions of Vista. The subjects were put on video, asked about their Vista impressions, and then shown a "new" operating system, code-named Mojave. More than 90 percent gave positive feedback on what they saw. Then they were told that "Mojave" was actually Windows Vista.

Microsoft is still trying to figure out just how it will use the Mojave footage in its marketing, though it will clearly have a place.

In an interview Wednesday, Windows unit business chief Bill Veghte told CNET News that he wants to see his unit try new things to get the message across.

"We have a huge perception opportunity," he said, offering a glass half-full assessment of things. "We are going to try a bunch of stuff."

Much of that perception, Microsoft belatedly acknowledges, stems from Apple's successful and unchallenged anti-Vista campaign. But, after stewing over the ads on many of his morning runs, Veghte decided that it was time to strike back, even without a new version of Windows to tout. Apple, he said, has "crossed a line" from fact into fiction.

Exactly. I have no problem with Apple (or any other company) competing aggressively with Microsoft. But the Apple ads lapse into outright lying.

Bravo to this.

I'll add a related anecdote. While up in Sonoma a few weeks ago, I was finishing off something on my laptop and our friends came into the hotel room. One of them, looking at the laptop said, "that's beautiful. Is that Mac OS X?" (Qualifier: She is a graphic designer. What can you do?) I said, "no, that's Windows Vista." And she replied," Wow. It's really nice looking. I heard it was awful."

It's time to set the record straight.

So in the intellectual climate of blogging, reader comments on news stories and message boards, it

So in the intellectual climate of blogging, reader comments on news stories and message boards, it's no longer stigmatized to stand up and say "I have an opinion, and it's not valid enough to receive mainstream news coverage, nor is it esoteric enough to merit the involvement of academe." Which is dumb. We're all going to drown in a terrible muck of unsubstantiated opinions that simply do not stand up to the most basic intellectual rigor. We're all going to die in a cold fire of uninteresting and dubious factoids because you couldn't be bothered to fact check with Snopes. I'm talking about you, my co-workers and former employers. You are not forwarding an e-mail from Bill Gates "just to be safe." You're contributing to the downfall of society. It'd be great for right-wing politicos if Barack Obama were a militant muslim, but he's not. Stop forwarding these to me. You are making yourself look like an idiot.

Blogs are even worse, because idiots can put their opinions out there and the Internet will never let us forget. But enough about what a self-involved asshole Paul Levinson is. That's a manifesto, and today, I want to talk about people who don't form opinions for themselves.

When I upgraded to Windows Vista, I was kind of like "this is dumb." It seemed to offer mostly cosmetic upgrades in exchange for one hell of a technological headache. But I was just pissed off and raving, and it wasn't really Vista's fault. The thing that pissed me off was that the tech people at the university I was attending at the time didn't trust users to update their antivirus software, and they had one of those ridiculous nanny programs, SmartEnforcer, and that program was garbage, so that I had no internet connectivity. And I blamed Vista; through no fault of the operating system, I was spewing venom about it at several people I knew, and the Mac users were all, predictably, smug jerks. Because they like being smug. Unfortunately, I fueled this baseless fire and helped to create a cult Vista-Hate based on non-substantive criticisms parroted from people on the teevee.

But maybe I'm being overly gentle; I'm sure people have tons of good, reasonable, experientially-based reasons for hating Windows Vista.

Oh wait. You're all idiots.

Oh brother. Aside from the silly "flat earth" ad, Microsoft apparently has some simplistic ads in the pipeline about Vista.

Bottom line is that Microsoft took people who'd heard bad things about Vista, showed them a "new" OS called "Navajo" and they were impressed. Ta Da! Navajo is actually Vista!

This is similar to the old Folger's ads where great coffee at an upscale restaurant was secretly swapped with Folger's instant coffee crystals and nobody noticed! Or the more recent Pizza Hut ads were pasta dishes at a fine restaurant were actually supplied by the pizza chain. Does anybody really believe this stuff?

At any rate, the above ads relied primarily on the customer thinking they were getting something upscale due to their surroundings, but the Microsoft campaign simply ignores all of Vista's issues! In other words, the very reasons for the bad press Microsoft is trying to dispel are completely ignored in the new campaign! From the article:

To be sure, the focus groups didn't have to install Vista or hook it up to their existing home network.

Of course not. They didn't have to use it long, either, or setup their peripherals, etc.

To put these ads in perspective, it's clear they're designed as if the typical bad Vista press goes like this:

The OS installed flawlessly with no interaction on my part, identifying my hardware on the first try. After the reboot all peripherals were identified and worked just as with XP. Installing my old apps was a breeze and they worked just as before. Performance was snappy (at least as good as XP) on my X-year old hardware. The system contains many productivity improvements that made my daily work faster and easier. More enjoyable, too. Security was much tighter, with the extra protection taking place in the background while I simply did my daily work. However, despite all the above I cannot recommend Vista because it's kind of ugly and doesn't really make me say "wow". You should skip this and buy Mac OS X.

If the above was a typical Vista review, one could argue that this steaming pile of "Navajo" marketing made sense. Unfortunately, the typical Vista review pans it for the exact opposite of that imaginary review. Many people think it's graphics, desktop, etc. are attractive. Big deal. Installation is bad, peripheral support is bad, it's slow, it needs new hardware, the UAC security "warnings" are a joke, and at the end of the day there's no six-year improvement on XP. The "Navajo" campaign will simply ignore that.

As one might expect, a campaign designed to ignore the actual reasons for Vista's bad press and reputation meets with Paul "iShill" Thurrott's complete approval. That alone ought to be enough to convince anyone what a sham it is.

Paul, of course, takes a shot at Apple's "Get a Mac" ads and says they "lapse into outright lying", yet this ruse out of Redmond is blessed and praised by the Window SuperSite.

Hey, Paul, if Apple did the same thing with MobileMe, showing a group of users who've heard bad things about it a controlled environment to disparage the bad press, while ignoring setup, mail, sync, and usability issues, would you approve or would you take Apple to task? Don't worry, the question is rhetorical so there's no need to spin a response. We both know your answer, and that differing view is the line between your Microsoft leg-humping and Apple bashing.

Meanwhile, I suspect this campaign will win over as many converts as the previously mentioned Folger's and Pizza Hut ads did. I'm sure some people will be fooled, but it won't be enough. Other people might be tempted to give Vista a try. Microsoft will not win most of those people over, however, because for them the truth behind Vista's extra efforts for little gain over XP will simply be re-affirmed.

Dear Journal,

Are we seeing the end of Windows?

Randall Kennedy thinks so. (here, then here) And the numbers don't look promising for the latest incarnation of Bill Gates' brainchild. (here)

In the 1990s, two technologies hit the market at exactly the same time, changing the course of computing forever: the Internet, and the Windows operating system. A global network connected virtually every PC with a modem, and Microsoft gave them a common interface to share. The ubiquity of Windows ensured unity and interoperability across the spectrum of modern computing.

Because Windows WAS the spectrum of modern computing.

Everybody had a fast, friendly, efficient, and relatively inexpensive operating system that allowed them to do things together. They could communicate in the same ways (e-mail, instant messaging, Web), they could work in the same ways (Office, Photoshop, business apps), and they could play in the same ways (Quake, World of Warcraft, etc.). All was peachy.

Fast-forward to 2008.

Windows Vista has cemented itself as a giant bust. Home users and giant corporations alike are flatly rejecting the new resource-guzzling clunker and clinging desperately to its more palatable predecessor, Windows XP. Why are people so turned off by it? Let me count the ways:

It's slow and clunky because it consumes an absurd amount of system resources.

It's not compatible with the hardware you already have, unless you bought your PC yesterday.

It's not compatible with the software you already have, unless you downloaded a Vista-compatible version yesterday.

It watches you like a hawk to make sure you don't share any copyrighted material.

Its licenses are more expensive and restrictive than ever.

It really doesn't do anything new.

Fewer people (and, most importantly, businesses) than ever are buying the latest build of Windows. Microsoft's once-mighty MSN search engine is a laughing stock compared with Google. Internet Explorer is slowly being shoved aside by the open-source Mozilla Firefox.

It's looking bad for Ballmer.

Meanwhile, Mac OS X and Linux--once dismissed as impractical niche products--are enjoying an explosion of popularity and success.

MacBooks, iPods and iPhones are all the rage.

iTunes is the #1 music retailer in the USA.

Steve Jobs (Bill Gates' best friend and mortal enemy) is officially the coolest man alive.

Fortune 500 mega-corporations are ditching Windows for Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Canonical's Ubuntu Linux distro is spreading across college campuses like wildfire.

Linux-driven open-source software projects are stealing the spotlight in the mainstream (such as Firefox, FileZilla and AVG antivirus).

Gimme your thoughts on this one. Where is Microsoft headed? Are they headed anywhere? Is this a good thing? How should they be responding to this increasingly anti-Microsoft market?

Interesting post over on Ars Technica - Microsoft does a blind test with Windows XP users, telling them that they are testing a new OS. It is really just Vista. And the overwhelming majority are impressed.

As I have said frequently before - Vista's problems are (for the most part) not technical - they are marketing and perception. It reminds me of a term from (I think) Tom Peters in Thriving on Chaos - "relative percieved product quality". It is not the true qualty that drives consumers, it is all about perception.

Focus groups in San Francisco were recently part of a Microsoft experiment. With all of the hate for Windows Vista, what if people used Vista but didn't know it was Vista...would they still hate it?

The answer? No.

Participants of the focus groups were all Windows XP users and they were told that they would be testing out a new operating system called "Mojave". More than 90 percent of the participants gave positive feedback on their experience with "Mojave", with one user exclaiming "oh wow" while using it.

When each of the groups were finished they were told that they had been using Windows Vista all along, to which they replied "Vista sucks". No, not really. =)

Something this illustrates is the public perception problem Vista has and while Microsoft has an uphill climb to change that perception, at least this research shows that it's possible.

No word yet on whether footage of these focus groups will be used in any advertising but I'd be surprised if it wasn't part of their upcoming $300 million push.

I like Vista, I really do. It's better than Xp in some ways and as good in others. I've yet to find something that is worse than Xp.
